What it is
Knee osteoarthritis is extremely common and its severity on X-ray correlates poorly with pain.
Dashboard impacts in collisions drive the knee backward and injure the joint and ligaments.
Knee pain is also referred from the hip and from the L3-L4 nerve root, which is why we examine those too.
How it usually presents
- Pain on weight bearing, stairs and standing from sitting.
- Stiffness after inactivity.
- Swelling and giving way.
- Night pain in more advanced arthritis.
How we treat it
- Corticosteroid or hyaluronic acid injection under guidance.
- Physical therapy, which for knee arthritis is genuinely among the most effective treatments available.
- Metabolic management, because load and inflammation both matter.
- Surgical referral where appropriate.

Are injections bad for my knee?
Repeated corticosteroid injections at short intervals are not advisable. Spaced appropriately and combined with rehabilitation they are a reasonable part of treatment.
