An injection into an inflamed bursa, most often at the hip or shoulder.
What it is
A bursa is a small fluid-filled sac that reduces friction between tissues. When inflamed it becomes exquisitely tender, and a targeted injection settles it.
What we use it for
- Trochanteric bursitis at the outer hip
- Subacromial bursitis at the shoulder
- Persistent outer hip pain after a fall
What to expect
- Ultrasound-guided, in the clinic room.
- A few minutes.
- Often substantial relief within days.
- Combined with physical therapy, because bursitis is usually secondary to how the tendon is loaded.
Risks
Every injection carries a small risk of bleeding, infection, an allergic reaction, or a temporary increase in pain. Steroid can raise blood sugar for several days. Serious complications are rare, and the specific risks for your procedure will be discussed before you consent.
