Myofascial Pain and Trigger Points

Muscle pain that persists long after the original injury has healed, referring in reproducible patterns.

What it is

Trigger points are taut, tender bands within muscle. Pressing one reproduces the patient’s familiar pain, often at a distance from the point itself.

They develop after injury, with sustained posture, and secondarily to any joint or nerve problem that alters how muscles are used.

How it usually presents

  • A deep, aching pain rather than a sharp one.
  • Reproducible referral — pressing one spot recreates pain elsewhere.
  • Restricted movement and a sense of tightness.
  • Often persists after a crash once everything else has settled.

How we treat it

  • Trigger point injection.
  • Physical therapy and a specific stretching programme.
  • Identifying and treating whatever underlying joint or nerve problem is driving the muscle to behave this way — otherwise the trigger points return.

To be assessed, call (314) 310-5577 or request an appointment. If this began with a crash or a fall, see accident and injury care.

Common questions

Why do my trigger points keep coming back?

Usually because something else is still driving them. Treating the muscle without addressing the underlying cause gives short-lived relief.
