Sharp, shooting, electric pain at the back of the head, following the occipital nerves.
What it is
The greater and lesser occipital nerves run from the upper neck over the back of the skull. When irritated or compressed they produce a distinctive electric pain.
Common after whiplash, and also from muscle entrapment and upper cervical arthritis.
How it usually presents
- Sudden shooting pain from the base of the skull toward the crown.
- Tenderness over a specific point where the nerve crosses the skull.
- Scalp sensitivity — brushing hair or lying on a pillow hurts.
- Usually one-sided.
How we treat it
- Occipital nerve block, usually diagnostic and therapeutic in one.
- Nerve pain medication.
- Treatment of the upper cervical spine where it is the driver.
