You have the right to a good faith estimate explaining how much your care will cost.
Under federal law, health care providers must give patients who are uninsured or who are not using insurance an estimate of the expected charges for medical items and services.
What you are entitled to
- A good faith estimate in writing at least one business day before a scheduled service. You can also ask for one before you schedule.
- An estimate that covers the total expected cost of the visit or procedure.
- The right to dispute the bill if it is at least $400 more than your good faith estimate.
- A copy of the estimate to keep.
Protection from surprise bills
You are also protected from balance billing for emergency services and for certain services received at an in-network facility from an out-of-network provider.
