A targeted injection used to prove which structure is generating your pain.
What it is
Where several structures could plausibly explain the same pain, a small amount of local anaesthetic placed precisely on one of them settles the question. If the pain goes while the anaesthetic is working, that structure is the source.

- Uncertainty between facet, disc and sacroiliac sources of low back pain
- Distinguishing referred pain from local pathology
- Before committing to a longer-lasting procedure
What to expect
- Performed under image guidance.
- You keep a pain diary for several hours afterwards — this is the actual result.
- Relief is deliberately temporary.
Risks
Every injection carries a small risk of bleeding, infection, an allergic reaction, or a temporary increase in pain. Steroid can raise blood sugar for several days. Serious complications are rare, and the specific risks for your procedure will be discussed before you consent.
