An injection at the back of the head for occipital neuralgia and some persistent headaches.
What it is
Local anaesthetic and usually a small amount of steroid are placed around the greater and lesser occipital nerves where they cross the base of the skull.

What to expect
- Quick — a few minutes, in the clinic room.
- Numbness over the back of the scalp for a few hours is expected.

Risks
Every injection carries a small risk of bleeding, infection, an allergic reaction, or a temporary increase in pain. Steroid can raise blood sugar for several days. Serious complications are rare, and the specific risks for your procedure will be discussed before you consent.
